Rethinking Basic Science
Abstract:
In 1953, in the context of the reconstruction and relaunch of physical sciences in Italy and the European effort to create CERN, Edoardo Amaldi, Gilberto Bernardini and Giorgio Salvini started a project for the creation of the Frascati National Laboratories, where the successful completion of an electron synchrotron in 1959 was followed by the construction of the first ever electron-positron collider AdA and its more powerful version ADONE. A new frontier in electron-positron physics was reached in 1999 when the φ-factory DAFNE started operating. The story of the Frascati Laboratories, of its accelerators and experiments, is outlined from the early days, and through a brief overview of the development of pioneering and successful novel research lines which enriched the scientific legacy passed on to the new generation. Through this legacy, the INFN Frascati National Laboratories are now planning for the future.
