 Abstract: Negative effects like defoliation and senescence (aging) are not the only phenomena triggered in plants by the phytohormone jasmonic acid (1); it also stimulates tuber growth, tendril coiling, and the release of odorous substances that can function as stress signals in plant defense. In the latter case only minute concentrations of jasmonic acid are required, for example, 100 nmol mL−1 for the tobacco plant. Even lower levels of the structurally related phytotoxin coronatin (ca. 1 nmol mL−1) induce the production and release of volatiles.
