Abstract: The origin of the activity of sulphated zirconia (SZ) for the isomerization of n-butane at room temperature is not resolved. To improve surface characterization, a model system consisting of a nanocrystalline SZ thin film supported on a Si wafer has previously been developed. Here we investigate the surface properties through interaction with n-butane and NH3. Physical characterization by TEM, SEM and AFM has been performed. XPS show the films to have a similar chemical composition as a typical powder catalyst. n-Butane TDS profiles showed no hydrocarbon fragment signals that significantly exceeded the blank experiment. This initial result suggests there are no detectable amounts of strongly adsorbed butane species on the SZ surface at room temperature. NH3-TDS revealed desorption at 373 to 423 K and at ca. 637 K with concomitant sulphate decomposition (induced by the presence of the basic probe), which is consistent with literature reports. The identified bulk structure, chemical composition, and surface properties indicate the films accurately model the sulphated zirconia powder catalyst.
