Abstract: A doubly vibrationally resonant technique-infrared-infrared-visible sum-frequency generation spectroscopy (IIV-SFG)-is used to study the C-O-stretch vibration of carbon monoxide adsorbed on a single-crystal Ru(001) surface. Temperature-dependent SFG spectra support an interpretation of the signal in terms of coupled CO oscillators. By variation of the center frequency of the IR pulses the resonant and nonresonant contributions to the IIV-SFG signal can be distinguished.
