Abstract: Intercalated layers of FeCl3 octahedra in graphite have been observed directly in an electron microscope capable of achieving a point-to-point resolution of 2.9 Å. The statistical nature of staging is apparent; interpenetration of differently staged regions, which affords a mechanism for facile interconversion between intercalates of different stages, can also be clearly seen.
