 Abstract: The decay rate of the 2s2 2p2 1S0 level in N?II has been measured optically (? =575?nm) at a heavy-ion storage ring. The result of (1.10± 0.27)?s-1 agrees with the theoretical predictions. The new data complement an earlier study of the same level decay in O?III and F?IV. Over this short range of ions, the role of the E2 and M1 decay modes changes dramatically.
