Abstract
The CTF, a Cryogenic Trap for Fast ion beams at the Max-Planck-Institut für Kernphysik in Heidelberg was originally constructed for developing the necessary technologies and concepts towards building the CSR (electrostatic Cryogenic Storage Ring). The greatly reduced blackbody radiation in the CTF is being used for the research on different cluster ions for temperatures between 10 and 300 K. The main subject of this thesis is the examination of the mass resolution of O-2- and S-ions in the CTF in an operating mode, where the injected ion bunch remains stable for long times. Therefore bunches of either pure or mixed O-2- and S- beams were stored in the trap under otherwise identical conditions, and their oscillation frequencies measured. Especially the following questions should be answered: Is it possible to separate the small mass difference between the two ions using fourier-transform mass spectroscopy, under these operating conditions? How does the mass resolution change between the normal and selfbunching trapping modes?
