Abstract
The article begins with a discussion of competing hypotheses regarding the future of service employment. In a cross-national perspective, differences in consumer-oriented services seem to be particularly important. They are largely explained by cross-national differences in wage differentials and tax burdens which influence employment in less productive private and public services. Highly productive information services, on the other hand, are likely to run into demand constraints defined by fundamental limitations of consumption time.
