Abstract
Abstract All gammarids leaving a 10 m long section of a woodland tributary by drifting downstream, together with those moving upstream, were counted over a period of 28 days. Losses from both ends of the controlled section halved its Gammarus-population within 20 days. The daily losses from drifting remained fairly constant at between 1 and 2 % of the standing crop. During the first and second weeks those moving upstream were the more numerous, but later on these movements were almost entirely stopped.
