Abstract
Every two seconds somebody somewhere in the world dies from an infectious disease. And epidemics such as influenza or recently SARS serve to remind us again and again that we share this world with microscopically small infectious agents that continually haunt us. How severe is the threat from ancient and newly ermerging diseases? How can - and must - medicine, basic research and politics defuse this situation?
