Abstract
The GERmanium Detector Array (G erda ) experiment has been built at the INFN National Gran Sasso Laboratory (L ngs ) for the search of neutrinoless double beta (0 νββ ) decay in 76 Ge. It is implementing a new shielding concept by operating bare Ge diodes, enriched in 76 Ge, in high purity liquid argon supplemented by a water shield. Phase I data taking of G erda has started in November 2011. This paper presents preliminary data showing the performance achieved so far, and outlines the preparations for Phase II that aims at reducing backgrounds by another factor of ten.
