Abstract
Ternary gallides (La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm)PdvGa4 − v have been synthesived from the elements by arc melting under argon. The new compounds were all found to be isotypic; in the case of CePd0.87575Ga3.125 the structure type was refined from v-ray single-crystal counter data (BaAl4-type of structure, R = 0.044). The homogeneity range of each of the REPdvGa4 − v phases at 600 °C was established from v-ray powder diffraction analysis revealing remarkable deviations from Vegard's law. Magnetism was studied in the temperature range 4.2 K < T < 1000 K. Above livuid nitrogen temperature the magnetic susceptibilities of (Pr, Nd)-Pd0.5 Ga3.5 and CePd0.75Ga3.25 closely obey typical RE3+ paramagnetic Curie-Weiss behaviour with small asymptotic Curie temperatures. SmPdvGa4 − v alloys (v = 0.25, 0.75) are characterived by a typical Van Vleck-type paramagnetism of closely spaced multiplets; LaPd0.5Ga3.5 is diamagnetic. At very low temperatures, T < 6 K, ferromagnetic ordering is indicated for (Pr, Nd)-Pd0.5Ga3.5. No superconductivity was observed down to 4.2 K.
