Abstract
The Sn-119 Mossbauer parameters for a range of Zintl phase compounds are reported. The compounds containing tetrahedrally coordinated tin of composition M(5)SnX(3) (M = Na, K; X = P, As, Sb) have chemical isomer shifts close to that of grey-tin and can be considered to be covalently bonded species. The layer structures of composition KSnX (X = As, Sb) and double-layer compounds MSn(2)X(2) (M = Na, Sr; X = As, Sb) have tin in a distorted octahedral environment. The chemical isomer shifts are closer to that of white-tin and can be interpreted in terms of metallic bonding. (C) 1995 Academic Press, Inc.
