Abstract
New ferroelectric compounds have been prepared by esterification of 4-alkyloxy-4′-hydroxybiphenyls with some optically active α(-chlorocarboxylic acids obtained from the corresponding α-amino acids. These substances exhibit chiral smectic C* phases. in a suitable temperature range and show extremely high values of the spontaneous polarisation up to 300 nC/cm2.
