Abstract
In general, event-related potentials (ERP) and event-related fields (ERF) represent a mixture of components originating from functionally different brain processes. The task of disentangling these components requires firm assumptions about their properties. Often it is assumed that each functional component is characterised by one temporal component (i.e. a time series) and one spatial component (i.e. a scalp distribution). Although this view is somewhat simplistic, it seems likely that such spatio-temporal components are related to functional brain processes. Hence, the idea is to decompose the measurement into such spatio-temporal components.
