Abstract
The cell adhesion molecule E-cadherin mediates the compaction process of mouse preimplantation embryos and is important for the maintenance and function of epithelial cell layers. β-catenin is a central component of the E-cadherin cell adhesion complex and plays in addition an essential role in the Wnt signaling pathway. Using the Cre/loxP system we specifically inactivated the E-cadherin and β-catenin gene during development and in organogenesis; the resulting phenotypes will be discussed.
