Abstract
In order to create an almost fully contextualized dataset on fungi, 6917 of in total 12,870 sequences of a phylogenetic tree have been annotated. The provided tree was created in ARB using high quality sequences of the SILVA SSURef 111 dataset. This study provides guidelines for retrieval of metadata and accentuates problems about the information content of publications and various online resources. An ontology was developed for the purpose of analysing the collected metadata in an ecological context. The ontology contains 136 well defined terms partitioned into two environment and substrate bins and one geography group. The finished dataset shall be used in future to investigate marine-terrestrial transitions of fungi and to reveal their still underestimated ecological potential within the marine realm and how environmental factors influence the community structure. But also their role within other habitats like the freshwater and terrestrial environment can be analysed.
