Abstract

A series of N-alkylformazans have been prepared and their cyclisation to leucoverdazyls studied. The cyclisation has been found to occur in the presence of strongly ionising bases, thermally, and in the presence of acid. The sensitivity of the cyclisation to the structure of the N-alkylformazans and to the cyclisation conditions are discussed in terms of mechanisms proposed for the reaction.
