Abstract
In this paper the most significant changes made to the sanctioning system by the 2015 reform are analysed. The changes cover not only the penalties, but also the accessory consequences: they range from the introduction of revisable permanent imprisonment to the unification of the suspension of execution of prison sentences, substitution and probation in one single institution, also covering the considerable expansion of confiscation and the creation of a new accessory consequence that allows DNA data to be collected. After outlining the changes and the reasons put forward by the legislature to justify them, a critical assessment is carried out against the backdrop of the evolution of crime in Spain.
