Abstract
Magnetic configurations represent key information both for the interpretation of experimental data as well as for physical modelling of stellarator plasmas. In the preparatory stage of a fusion device, knowledge of the structure of the magnetic field is essential for the design and the optimization of diagnostics, e.g., for sight-line optimization. The general concept for data storage forWendelstein 7-X is strictly database oriented. Hence, also the magnetic configuration as the outcome of equilibrium calculations are to be stored and administered by means of data bases. This paper reports on the realization of a magnetic configuration database. Benefits of database storage are clearly and precisely defined data sources which allow for a straightforward handling of a large number of magnetic configurations. Search capabilities allow one to check for calculated equilibria and to interpolate for configurations in parameter space. Moreover, the database is intended as basis for fast equilibrium reconstruction. Beyond the solution for the storage of magnetic equilibria, general issues in storage of simulation results are covered, i.e. the storage of simulation relevant information (settings for calculations) for the purpose of reproducibility and data quality management. The basic idea of this part of data storage is to provide traceability of simulations. The generality of the approach is capable to store arbitrary magnetic equilibria from different devices, which is motivated by comparative studies. Next steps are the extension to direct 3d grid fields, the inclusion of geometric data and configuration specific simulation results such as neoclassical transport coefficients. The paper describes the structure of the W7-X magnetic configuration database and its implementation in a RDBMS (ORACLE). Access from applications are realized by a library for data access, writing and updating.
