Abstract
The determination of the three-dimensional wave spectrum of internal waves from array data by inverse techniques is discussed. Model cross-spectra are constructed as two-dimensional projections of a parametrized model spectrum and fitted by a least-squares method to the observed cross-spectra. The covariances of the model parameters are obtained from the covariance matrix of the measured cross-spectra. The treatment of model constraints is discussed. The method is applied to the internal wave experiment (IWEX) array consisting of 20 current velocity sensors which measured the internal wave fluctuations in the main thermocline of the Sargasso Sea.
