Abstract
The movement of liquids on surfaces has been studied for more than 100 years. An example is the formation of "wine tears" on a wineglass caused by changes in surface tension induced by evaporation. In his Perspective, Grunze discusses results in the same issue by Gao et al. and Gallardo et al. on movement of liquid drops over patterned surfaces. The results may be important in developing "laboratory on a chip" systems in which liquid samples are transported around a microfluidic analyzer.
