Abstract
A novel procedure is described for the isolation and purification of undischarged and still functional spindle trichocysts from Paramecium caudatum. The purified undischarged as well as the in vitro artificially discharged trichocysts are not altered ultrastructurally compared to those in unfragmented cells. Since most of the isolated undischarged trichocysts are devoid of a membrane, it is evident that the undischarged state of the organelle can be maintained without a membrane.
