Zusammenfassung
Biology is necessarily an empirical science and theories in biology tend t o be either historical or phenomenological. Our increasing understanding of biochemical mechanisms and the tantalizing possibilities offered by genetic manipulation bring into ever sharper focus the shortcomings of our present theretical framework. The conceptual link between biological function and chemistry is provided by structure. In an earlier age, classical anatomy provided the necessary framework to understand physiology but as the focus of physiology became physiological chemistry so anatomy became more and more molecular. With the 1982 award of the prize for chemistry to Aaron Klug, the Nobel committee single out the most successful molecular anatomist of our time.
