Abstract
The present contribution deals with the evolution of public international concerning the protection and management of groundwater. Although the contribution criticizes that the existing international rules as well as the newly developed ones only deal with transboundary aquifers and neglect that the interest of the international community in safeguarding such aquifers is not sufficiently taken care of it acknowledges that certain environmental standards have been set. These standards which root in the principle of sustainable development have a significant bearing on all management activities concerning aquifers.
