For the second phase of the commissioning of the SuperKEKB e+e--collider, CLAWS, a scintillator/SiPM-based detector system, has been developed to study the time evolution of the injection backgrounds. The measurements of this detector will provide crucial information for the later operation of the Belle II pixel vertex detector.
CLAWS consists of two ladders with 8 scintillator tiles each. The scintillator tiles are individually read out by a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM). The system features sub-nanosecond time resolution combined with continuous sampling over millisecond time scales by the read-out with dedicated digital oscilloscopes.
The main topic of this thesis is the ladder assembly and the commissioning procedure of the CLAWS sensors. This includes basic functionality tests, a thermal noise rate characterization of the SiPMs and a cosmic muon calibration of the individual channels. Furthermore, additional studies of the properties of the CLAWS sensors were carried out, including a temperature study for the thermal noise rate and light yield, a spatial light yield uniformity study and studies of the time resolution. Finally, this thesis provides an overview over an integration and test beam campaign at DESY, demonstrating the basic performance and capabilities of the sensors, and a detailed report of the final integration and installation of the sensors and the system setup for the operation in the BEAST experiment in phase II.
