Abstract
The performance of transceive phased array (one channel phased transmission; multi-channel reception) and a TEM volume transmit/receive (T/R) coil were compared. The transceive array provided similar SNR in the center and substantially better SNR in the periphery of the head. The transceive array produced slightly better homogeneity over the head in comparison to the TEM and similar transmit efficiency, when factoring out losses associated with splitting the power to the individual coils. This loss in overall efficiency can be regained by the use of RF amplifiers which can be configured as multiple low power modules.
