Abstract
This paper focuses on the precision of rate measurements with radiolabeled sulfur, for tracking intermediate sulfur compounds and their consumption pathways in biogeochemical systems involving sulfur turnover. The discussion is based on models and examples from sulfate reduction and thiosulfate turnover. Complications arising from the oxidation of formed reduced sulfur compounds and isotopic exchange are discussed. Finally, theoretical and practical aspects of amendment studies are presented using examples from thiosulfate turnover.
