Abstract
Subfossil remains of Cladocera (Crustacea) and Chironomidae (Diptera) have been
analyzed from a 660 cm core of brackish water sediments, covering the period from Subbo­real 1 to Subatlantic 2 (5000 years).
99 % of the cladocerans belonged to two taxa (Chydorus sphaericus, Alona rectangula)
which occur in the oligo- and mesohaline coastal region of the Baltic Sea. Hence, the cladoceran assemblage was characterized by species which tolerate brackish water conditions.
Of the chironomids, the marine species
Clunio marinus was found only in two samples.
A Chironomus species, probably
Chironomus salinarius, predominated throughout the
core. From the presence of head capsules of the
Cricotopus
type it was presumed that the
halobiontic genus
Halocladius
was represented. Uncertainties over the identification of
indicator species for brackish environments made the evaluation of salinity effects on the species composition of the subfossil assemblages difficult.
