Abstract
The presence in lakes Amvrakia and Trichonis, Greece, of an Oscillatoria species (Cyanophyceae) closely related to the members of the Prolificae - sectio i. e. 0. prolifica (GREV.) GOM., 0. agardhii GOM., 0. rubescens D.C. ex GOM. as well as to 0. mougeotii KÜTZ. ex FORTI, allows for a re-examination of the problematic diagnostic criteria involved in the systematics of these taxa. The lack of sufficient diagnostic criteria for the distinction between 0. mougeotii KÜTZ. ex FORTI and 0. mougeotii f. major ELENK. is worthnoticing. Additionally is stressed the strong relation of 0. agardhii var. isothrix to 0. mougeotii. The organism found is presently classified as Oscillatoria cf. agardhii var. isothrix SKUJA. The need of revising the taxonomic status of the above mentioned taxa is emphasized.
