Zusammenfassung
A Y-maze paradigm for the selection of mutants of Drosophila melanogaster disturbed in visual orientation is described. Eleven mutants have been isolated in this way; in addition 24 existing mutants were tested. Most of the mutants isolated show defects in the periphery of the visual system. A complementation group of 6 ERG mutants is mainly affected in the off-transient of the lamina potential. A subgroup shows also an abnormal time course of the receptor potential. Three mutants have been obtained with defects in the dioptric apparatus and the screening pigment. Only 2 strains are probably central nervous system (CNS) mutants, showing defects in the computation of both position and movement. These two mutants are described in Part II.
