Abstract
Inelastic scattering of fast electrons passing through a metal slab is studied. The energy‐loss probability for bulk and surface plasmons is derived. Numerical calculations are carried out for aluminium slabs. The energy‐loss process due to bulk plasmons is found be the dominant loss process. For very thin aluminium slabs an additional broad surface peak is obtained. Its position shows a nearly linear dependence on the slab thickness. The bulk loss probability shows an interesting dependence on the slab thickness.
