Abstract
Membrane proteins are among the most diverse topics covered in this journal, not only in terms of their biological function but also in terms of the methods used to study them. Some of this diversity is reflected in the reviews contained within this section. Membrane proteins are notoriously difficult to crystallize and progress towards determining their high-resolution structures by crystallography has been slow. This has prompted the search for alternative methods for probing their three- dimensional structure.
