Abstract
The membrane potentials for homogeneous and asymmetric cellulose acetate membranes were measured using different electrolyte solutions. The experimental results manifest a strong difference between the membrane potential of a homogeneous membrane on the one hand and the membrane potentials of asymmetric membranes on the other hand. Furthermore, the membrane potentials of asymmetric cellulose acetate membranes depend on the boundary conditions and thus on the direction of volume flow. The results can be theoretically treated taking into account the concentration profiles within the porous sublayer of the asymmetric membranes.
