Abstract
Disruption of cystine residues is a primary component process in the inactivation of cystine-containing enzymes and hormones by ultraviolet light. The photosensitivity of protein-bound cystine residues has been demonstrated to depend on their microenvironment. There is evidence that quanta primarily absorbed in the side chains of aromatic amino acid residues of a given protein molecule contribute to the destruction of the cystine residues, although no direct experimental evidence related to the nature and mechanisms of this process is at hand. This study was undertaken in order to investigate whether quanta primarily absorbed in a free aromatic amino acid can indirectly produce destruction of free cystine in an aqueous solution
