Abstract

Many of the spectroscopic and structural techniques developed in surface science during the last thirty years rely on the absorption, reflection or scattering of photons at the first few atomic layers of a solid. The present article chronicles the introduction and development of these techniques and provides a brief, largely phenomenological description of the processes on which they are based.
