Abstract
Like many castles that dot the landscape of Mitteleuropa, the picturesque palace of Trenčín in western Slovakia is home to a tale of star-crossed lovers. A fetching maiden has been imprisoned in the castle; the cruel count, who presides over the manor, vows to free her only if her beloved succeeds in digging a well through the solid rock upon which the Schloss rests. Our hero embarks on this Sisyphean challenge without a second thought, and after three years of incessant labor strikes water. The count’s word is good, and the lovers are reunited. One remarkable detail distinguishes
