Abstract
Electron microscopy (EM) provided fundamental insights about the ultrastructure of neuronal synapses. The large amount of information present in the contemporary EM datasets pre-cludes a thorough assessment by visual inspection alone, thus requiring computational methods for the analysis of the data. Here, I review image processing software methods ranging from membrane tracing in large volume datasets to high res-olution structures of synaptic complexes. Particular attention is payed to molecular level analysis provided by recent cr yo -electron microscopy and tomography methods.
