Abstract
In this thesis, I demonstrate experimentally that the self-modulation instability of a long proton bunch in plasma can be seeded by a preceding short electron bunch. I demonstrate that timing reproducibility and control of the self-modulation are at the level of a small fraction of the modulation period. I show that the growth of the self-modulation can be controlled by varying independently the amplitude of the seed wakefields and the growth rate of the instability.
