Abstract
This chapter describes the historical development, mandate, tasks and structure of the European Union Agency for Law Enforcement Cooperation (Europol). A focus is laid on Europol’s role in cross-border police cooperation as the main hub for information exchange in the EU. The author highlights that Europol’s evolvement has not come to an end despite recent amendments to the 2016 Europol Regulation in 2022; topical problems remain, such as the legality of handling voluminous data sets, adequate oversight of the Agency and its accountability. The chapter ends with some reflections on Europol’s challenges giving some food for thoughts on the future development of the EU’s law enforcement cooperation.
