Abstract
Background: The adage from Shakespeare, "troubles, not as single spies, but in battalions come," holds true for Nicotiana attenuata, which is commonly attacked by both pathogens ( Pseudomonas spp.) and herbivores ( Manduca sexta) in its native habitats.
