Abstract
The process of linear acceleration emission in the vacuum gaps close to the surface of a pulsar is considered. An approximate expression for the spectrum produced by a uniformly accelerated charge is calculated. Comparisons are made between this process and that of curvature radiation. It is demonstrated that these two radiation mechanisms are related in the context of pulsar magnetospheres, and while unimportant in static gaps, linear acceleration emission is a more appropriate description of the photon production in oscillatory gap models.
