Abstract
We review the latest H.E.S.S. results on Cen~A and describe an acceleration mechanism operating close to the black hole that could account for the observed TeV characteristics. We discuss the implications for Cen A as a possible UHECR proton source and argue that conventional acceleration scenarios seem to face serious challenges to account for proton energies beyond 5 \times $10^{19} eV. We suggest that the operation of an additional mechanism (shear) could allow to boost proton energies beyond this limit.
