Abstract
Results obtained by IR and UV-vis spectroscopy of matrix-isolated bare carbon chains and their oxides are presented. These species have a few very strong absorptions. For species identification we applied selective laser-induced oxidation and isotopic substitutions of C and O atoms. In accordance with quantum calculations our results indicate that the positions of the major absorption features of the chains are only weakly influenced by the presence of the terminating oxygen atoms.
