Abstract
The Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino experiment (KATRIN) aims for a determination of the neutrino mass with a sensitivity of 200 meV at 90 % C.L. in a model-independent way by investigating the tritium beta-decay spectrum close to the endpoint. For the full neutrino mass sensitivity, a very low background level is required. Within this thesis, the origin of the currently elevated background is examined by dedicated measurements. In addition the background properties during the first neutrino mass measurement as well as a possible background mitigation strategy, the shifted analyzing plane, are investigated.
