Simulating prospective episodes can influence future-oriented decisions. Here, we demonstrate that this effect is mediated by the anticipated affect of the imagined situation. The affect, in turn, is determined by the features that are particularly salient in the situation. We thus should carefully consider what future we want to imagine.
