Lanthanum Y type zeolites were prepared via solid-state ion exchange between LaCl3 and NH4-Y as well as in the conventional manner by repeated ion-exchange in a suspension of Na-Y powder and La3+ salt solutions. Conventionally exchanged La-Y samples with a degree of exchange close to 100% were obtained by intermittent calcination and re-exchange, whereas a solid-state reaction between LaCl3 and almost 100%-exchanged NH4-Y easily resulted in highly exchanged La-Y. Even though the presence of traces of water is not a prerequisite for conducting solid-state ion exchange, the thus obtained materials were rendered active catalysts in n-decane cracking after only brief contact with small amounts of water vapour. Comparison with the performance of conventionally obtained La-Y samples showed that the catalytic behaviour of La-Y obtained through solid-state ion exchange is equivalent to that of conventionally obtained materials.
