Abstract: Electron beam ion traps (EBITs) are capable of producing ions of the highest charge

states and are relatively compact and are of lower-cost compared to particle accelerators.

Highly charged ions are needed in basic physics research, e.g. for precision measurements

in Penning trap mass spectrometers.

The present thesis deals with the construction and commissioning of another compact

rough-temperature EBIT to produce highly charged ions for the PENTATRAP experiment

in the division “Stored and Cooled Ions” at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear

Physics in Heidelberg. So far, the desgin and setup has been succesfully completed

within this thesis. Furthermore, the electron gun has been operated at emission currents

of over 20 mA and electron beam energies of over 3 keV. The production of ions was

successfully tested with argon by observing dielectronic recombinations with a silicon

drift detector.
