 Abstract: Selected proton sites were substituted by methyl groups in the quantum
spin system CuHpCl, in order to elucidate the magnetic structure of
this material, previously considered as a prototypal spin ladder.
Magnetization measurements show that the spin gap is weakened or even
suppressed upon methyl substitution. This strongly suggests that the
main magnetic exchange of these systems does not occur within the
Cu-Cl-Cu dimer unit. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
