Abstract: With the cost of DNA sequencing decreasing, we are entering a new era of ‘biosphere genomics’, in which extant and ancient DNA can be captured at planetary scale (that is, earth’s genetics). A recent study in Nature by Pavlopoulos et al. illustrates the incredible sequence diversity that can be unlocked when organizing proteins across this catalogue of life through massively parallel graph-based clustering.
